Environmental sustainability

We have set ourselves the strategic intent “to be the best performing healthcare organisation in Australia by 2025”. To meet this goal and ensure the health and wellbeing of our communities is improved, we are committed to developing an environmentally sustainable future at all of our facilities.

Our Vision, Mission and Values support our commitment to become an organisation that uses resources responsibly, respectfully and in a sustainable manner.

As a Catholic healthcare provider, St John of God Health Care has an enduring responsibility to demonstrate strong resources stewardship, including in relation to environmental resources and our impact on the environment.

In delivering services, the healthcare sector and hospitals in particular have measurable impacts on the environment. We also recognise the clear link between environmental health and people’s health. The effects of climate change has clear consequences for healthcare. Our responsibility as a healthcare leader includes addressing environmental and climate change impacts.

We are committed to addressing our environmental impacts which will be driven through our most recent Environmental Sustainability Strategy (2021-2025). We continue to focus on supporting programs and providing funding to reduce waste, water, energy and greenhouse emissions, while ensuring we meet legislation requirements. A key focus will also be improving our environmental performance in the procurement of goods and services, and capital works and developments.

The four core strategies areas of our Environmental Sustainability Strategy are:

  • leadership and culture: provide leadership that promotes an environmentally aware culture
  • environmental performance: improve performance against environmental target areas
  • climate change: identify climate change impacts to health services and assets
  • continuous improvement: demonstrate continuous improvement through measuring, monitoring, reporting and evaluation of environmental performance.

Our most recent Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2021-2025 demonstrates the strong commitment from Trustees, Board and caregivers, and is a call to action as we continue to improve our performance in this important area.
